Here's a little bit of info about my site.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I decided to learn and become a webmaster when the real estate market slowed down in October of 2005. I also wanted to have more control over keywords, title tags and etcetera than just a regular template website. I also wanted to own the domain.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My first website was launched in about mid 2006. It was http://www.realestatetraininginfo.com
How did you decide on a name for your website?
My domain name was picked as an available keyword rich domain name.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
My current website is my baby and will always a work in progress. As I figure out more things and and add more things it will become extremely user friendly.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
Eventually I would like to dominate my local real estate market. I don't currently have any intention of selling my website. Of course if the offer was right, everything is for sale.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
It's been a 2+ year learning curve and it's been worth every aggravation and late night. Now that my skills have increased dramatically I expect my online success will increase daily. I've kept my expenses to an absolute bare minimum because real estate was not generating very much revenue.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would start to outsource some of the webmaster tasks. I would also have some custom scripts written and I would have someone set up and write all of my messages for an email autoresponder.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I sure would try especially if it was generating some good income.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
One major headache was not being able to keep and renew some 400+ domains that I researched and bought in 2006. Lack of funds.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Learning everything on my own without a mentor. I had to sort through and weed out the good info from the bad.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Link building, forums and blog discussions.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Little or no instant gratification, but well worth the effort in the long run. Eventually I will have several income producing websites.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I have 5 sons and I am teaching the ones that are interested webmaster skills. I'm sure after I become financially independent I will at least still dabble online, that is if I'm not on vacation or hunting or fishing with my boys.
